Team
Open tryouts

I'm building a roster. I want you on it.

Impulse88 Team is a new Dota 2 roster, built to compete for the tournament. I am not running it from the sidelines. I train with the team, every block, on the same schedule as everyone else. Five places are open, and each one pays RM 100,000 a year.

PAY

RM 100,000 a year

Paid monthly, on a twelve-month contract, per player. It is a salary and not a share of prize money, so it lands whether a tournament goes our way or it does not.

5

Five places

A full roster. I am not filling one gap on an existing team — this is being built from nothing, and everyone arriving is arriving at the same time.

GOAL

One target

Win the tournament. Not place, not qualify, not build for next season. If that sounds arrogant for a new roster, it is meant to — it is the whole reason for paying salaries instead of splitting winnings.

What I'm looking for

Five roles, and I would rather fill them with the right people slowly than the wrong people this week.

1

Carry

Safelane. Someone who farms patiently without going missing for twenty minutes, and who can tell the difference between a fight worth joining and a fight that just looks exciting.

2

Mid

The lane that decides the tempo of the first fifteen minutes. Deep hero pool matters more here than anywhere — if you play three heroes, mid is not your role on this team.

3

Offlane

Comfortable being outnumbered and still coming out with something. Initiation is usually yours, which means the team's worst fights will often be traceable to you. Bring a thick skin.

4

Soft support

Roaming, vision, and the discipline to give up farm you could have taken. The role where good decisions are least visible on the scoreboard and most visible in the result.

5

Hard support

Wards, pulls, saves, and the least glamorous forty minutes in the game. Paid exactly the same as the carry, because the job is exactly as hard.

What matters more than your MMR

Rank gets you looked at. It does not get you signed. I have watched enough high-MMR players lose to worse teams to know that the ceiling on a roster is almost never mechanical.

What I am actually filtering for is three things. You can be told something and change it — in the same block, not next month. You are not a problem to play with when you are losing, because everybody is pleasant at 20-5 and nobody is tested there. And you turn up, on the days you feel like it and the days you do not.

A player who is a thousand MMR lower and has those three things will beat the alternative over a season. I have been on both kinds of team.

What the week looks like

Full-time. This replaces a job; it is not something you fit around one.

AM

Individual work

Own the part of your game that is behind. Laning reps, last-hit drills, hero pool work. You pick the focus, I want to hear what it is.

PM

Scrims

Blocks against other rosters, drafted properly and played properly. The point of a scrim is the mistakes, so we do not restart the ones we are losing.

EVE

Review

Replays, together. Short, specific and blunt. Every criticism has to come with a timestamp — if you cannot point at the moment, it is a mood and not a note.

One full day off a week, and it is a real day off. Burning out a roster three months before the tournament is the single most common way teams like this fail, and it is entirely self-inflicted.

How to apply

Keep it short. I would rather read fifty honest paragraphs than five polished ones.

  1. Send your Dota profile. Dotabuli or your Steam profile — whichever shows your real match history rather than a highlight reel.
  2. Tell me your role, and your second role. Everyone has a second. If you genuinely do not, say that instead of inventing one.
  3. Tell me about a game you lost because of something you did. This is the part I read first. Anyone who cannot answer it is telling me something whether they mean to or not.
  4. Confirm you can train full-time, and when you could start.

Every application gets a reply, including the ones that are a no. Tryouts run as scrim blocks with me in the lobby, not as a solo ranked audition.

Questions I have already been asked

Is the salary really RM 100,000? Yes, per player, per year, paid monthly. Prize money is separate and split with the roster.

Do I have to relocate? Tell me where you are when you apply. The training schedule assumes everyone is on the same clock, which is the part that matters more than the postcode.

What if I am not good enough yet? Apply anyway and say so. I would rather see someone who knows exactly what is wrong with their game than someone who thinks nothing is.

Are you actually playing, or managing? Playing. That is the whole point. I am not hiring a team to watch — I want to be in the lobby, taking the same notes as everyone else.
